Side Effects of Diazepam

Side effects, also referred to as adverse events are unexpected or unwanted reactions patients have when using a medication. They vary in intensity and type; thus, FDA-approved treatments like diazepam / Valium come with their own comprehensive list of side effects that can be found on the enclosed leaflet should you purchase them.

Diazepam is a drug that can have several side effects. Some of the leading causes for these symptoms to occur are listed below:

  • You may experience some mild side effects as your body becomes accustomed to treatment. You are likely going to feel good again in a few hours or days while this passes over and you adjust!
  • Abruptly discontinuing the use of this tablet can cause side effects. Patients who want to discontinue using it must follow a tapering off schedule so there are no withdrawal symptoms.
  • In some cases, changing the dosage of medication can cause side effects. When this occurs, it may be due to a change in how much new material is being introduced into your system each day or week.

The body has trouble adjusting when we alter doses for any reason and sometimes these changes are accompanied by unpleasant symptoms like nausea even though you’re taking fewer pills than before!

Common Diazepam Side Effects

The FDA examined many aspects of the diazepam tablets to safeguard patients before they were allowed on the market. One aspect that was investigated is their low side effect occurrence rate, but even with a low rate it still has its risks and must be disclosed by law.

Some common diazepam side effects and home remedies are:

  • Dizziness – One of the best ways to get rid of dizziness is through the epley manoeuvre. A person should keep hydrated and refrain from eating sugary snacks or fatty foods, as well as consume an apple cider vinegar and honey mixture or almonds every 20-30 minutes until they have no more symptoms.
  • Drowsiness – Drowsy individuals should not panic but rather take a few minutes to walk or drink water. If the drowsiness is excessive, then it may be best for you to have a short nap and eat an energy-boosting snack before continuing on with your day.
  • Indigestion – The following drinks can eliminate indigestion: peppermint tea, chamomile tea, apple cider vinegar and ginger. For a refreshing drink try lemon water which is popular in many cultures for its medicinal qualities.
  • Nausea – Nausea can be reduced by changing your body position or stress levels, but it’s also good to try a cold compress. You could put one around the temples and base of you neck for short periods of time, as well as sucking on ice chips or sipping water when feeling nausea coming on. If these stops are not enough then take the next dose with an easy-to-digest meal nearby so that you don’t get too queasy.
  • Loss of Muscle Coordination – In order to relieve this patients should rest for a few hours or use an ice pack. If there are any muscle swellings on the patient’s body then they could wear compression bandages or elevate their feet in order to minimize inflammation.

Uncommon Diazepam Side Effects

Though uncommon, some side effects of diazepam are the result of treatment / medical condition interactions. This can also be due to ignorance to dosage instructions or an allergic reaction. Like other treatments, it cannot be used in conjunction with certain medicines and situations.

Uncommon Side Effects:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Behavioural Problems
  • Confusion
  • Low Energy
  • Abnormal Nervous System Function Affecting Alertness

If you experience any of these symptoms, discontinue taking the tablet and contact your doctor immediately.

Rare Diazepam Side Effects

Diazepam is the best way to treat anxiety, because it has little chance of causing addiction or withdrawal. While there are rare side effects when taken wrong–which means you should always take care with your dosage!

Diazepam has a low potential for dependence and addiction in most people who use it responsibly (meaning following instructions). But if someone already vulnerable to alcohol abuse takes diazepam without due care- that’s really bad news! They could experience rare but severe symptoms as a result of taking too much of this drug.

If you are taking Diazepam for more than four months without a medical consult or supervision, rare side effects may occur that require professional care. These cannot be treated with do-it-yourself remedies and need to be seen by a doctor immediately.

Some Rare Side Effects Are:

  • Anaphylaxis (a severe type of allergic reaction)
  • Angioedema
  • Lower number of blood platelets
  • Depression
  • Hallucinations
  • Low blood pressure
  • Seizures
  • Memory loss

Patients should be well informed before taking a treatment to ensure optimal benefits and no major or persistent side effects. Side-effects are minimised when patients follow best practice guidelines, so it is worth stressing the importance of doing this for better health outcomes.

Never Mix Diazepam & Alcohol

Diazepam is a powerful anxiety medication that can be used to treat episodes of debilitating panic. However, when combined with alcohol the effects will worsen and could lead to an increase in adverse reactions such as aggression or cognitive impairment. In some cases it may even cause both depressants’ side effects at once which means severe diazepam side effects are more likely too occur such as:

  • Aggression
  • Reduced heart rate
  • Deep coma like slumber that will be hard to wake from
  • Loss of memory
  • Excessive drowsiness

In recent years, the use of diazepam (Valium) has increased in popularity among college students. However, there are many dangers associated with combining this drug with alcohol which can produce an addictive high and even lead to death if used for too long. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that approximately one-fifth of people who take both drugs will experience some type of brain damage or die from it within a year after cessation. Despite these risks, 1 out 5 users still combine them because they believe that is how you get a better buzz than either substance alone would provide separately.
