Diazepam / Valium Dosage Instructions

Diazepam / Valium Dosage Instructions

Diazepam is a prescription drug that relieves symptoms of anxiety and other conditions when prescribed by your doctor. It’s dosage varies depending on the person, condition being treated, severity of symptoms, their body weight & past medical history such as any allergies or medications they take regularly.

The strength of the medication is dependent on dose, and so it follows that frequency depends too. The time between doses also varies depending on medical condition being treated with Diazepam tablets.

  • Anxiety – One dose of 2mg to 10mg can be taken 2 to 4 times each day. Dose may be increased or decreased according to symptoms experience.
  • Insomnia – 2 mg to 10 mg can be taken one time before bed only.
  • Seizures – 2 mg to 10 mg can be taken 2 to 4 times a day.
  • Muscle spasms – 2 mg to 10 mg can be taken 3 or 4 times a day. Patients should not exceed 10 mg for the treatment of muscle spasms or cramps.
  • Alcohol withdrawal – 10 mg that is taken 3 or 4 times during the first 24 hours. Thereafter, the dose should be reduced to 5 mg.

For elderly patients, and those who suffer from life-altering illnesses like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease, it may take time to find the perfect dosage for their specific need. The initial dose is usually between 2mg once a day or twice per day but can be gradually increased depending on advice of course.

You can improve your symptoms with diazepam. The medicine works quickly or over the course of a few days to reduce anxiety and insomnia. If you do not see any changes, don’t increase your dose unnecessarily.

Additional dosage instructions:

  • If a dose is missed, it can be taken as soon as they remember. However, it should be skipped if it is close to the next scheduled dose.
  • Avoid eating heavy/fatty meals before taking this medication.
  • Take with water only
  • Do not mix with alcohol

How Long Does Diazepam Last?

The medication can be taken in various ways, such as orally, injection or rectal gel – depending on what is available on the platform you are buying from. These different forms have different times to take effect which may vary based upon your preference and form of purchase.

A diazepam dosage will show up in 15-60 minutes and last for 6 hours, although rectal gels are more often used on people with seizures because it starts working right away.

When taking diazepam, it is essential to know how long the medication stays effective in the body. This will help you avoid associated risks that could arise from extended use of this drug such as:

Dependency risk – For those who use diazepam tablets on a regular basis, the risk of dependence and tolerance is high. If one does not adhere to dosage instructions, they may have increased sensitivity for their medication which can lead to severe side effects as well as addiction. To avoid these risks it’s crucial that one doses themselves correctly with this drug.

Serious interaction effectsValium is a drug that can have more serious side effects if patients take certain medications before it is eliminated from the body. Sedatives, sleeping pills, opioids or tranquillizers should be avoided if you are taking Valium. The same goes for the use of alcohol when on this medication

Too much medication in the body – Be careful not to overdose! Too much of this treatment in the body can cause adverse effects such as confusion, shortness of breath and impaired balance.

How Long Does Diazepam Stay in Your System?

The active metabolites that are created during the process of elimination can stay in your body for about ten days and have a beneficial effect. However, when they’re finally flushed out, it usually takes several days to get rid of them all.

A diazepam dosage is converted to nordiazepams, oxazepam and temazepam in the body. These metabolites have their respective half-lives:

  • Nordiazepam – 40 to 99 hours
  • Oxazepam – 4 to 15 hours
  • Temazepam – 8 to 22 hours

Your body will eliminate diazepam in 1 to 3 days, but the long half-life of nordiazepam means that this substance can remain for a longer time.

Valium can be difficult to get rid of, depending on your age and liver function. As you grow older the functionality of your liver reduces, which makes elderly adults have a bit more difficulty eliminating Valium than younger people do. Liver disease from alcohol addiction or hepatitis also hinder elimination rates for this medication significantly.

Patients need to understand if their liver damage is from the overuse of alcohol, as diazepam is commonly used in treating these withdrawal symptoms. If you take too much of this medication or use it for an extended period, memory loss and falls can occur due your body’s inability to excrete benzodiazapines efficiently.

Is Diazepam Safe to Take Every Day?

Diazepam 10 mg is a safe and successful treatment when it’s used as instructed. Benzodiazepines, in general, may produce emotional or physical dependence especially if not used according to their instructions. This commonly occurs after two weeks of consecutive daily use which usually happens for anxiety disorders because the disorder becomes chronic without continuing with this medication.
Medication should be taken as directed, but long-term use and incorrect usage can result in extreme drowsiness, confusion, or memory loss.

The use of this medication should not be consecutive for more than 2-4 weeks and if patients do not feel a difference in their condition, they need to visit their healthcare provider or research further.
