A Guide to Sleeping Pills: What Works and What Doesn’t

One of the most common sleep problems we experience is insomnia. The lack or disruption in our natural slumber patterns can wreak havoc on both your physical and mental health.

Insomnia Defined

The term insomnia can apply to a number of different problems. These include sleep phase disorder, muscle spasms, and thyroid problems. However, when used in its most common sense, insomnia refers to a disruption in our natural sleep patterns. What Causes Insomnia Some causes of insomnia are physical, while others are mental. Some physical causes include conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia during pregnancy, and nighttime leg cramps. Mental causes can include anxiety or depression. Some mental causes can include eating disorders and sleep disorders, such as insomnia and parasomnias. Each person experiences insomnia differently. The problem is that most people are unsure what is causing their insomnia.

Causes of Insomnia

Is your insomnia caused by poor quality sleep or an issue with an insomnia medication. Let’s first discuss the causes of insomnia. The stage of sleep varies based on the time of the night. The brain experiences rapid eye movement (REM) sleep when our bodies rejuvenate from a full day. If we don’t receive the REM stage of sleep, our bodies become exhausted and get sleepy again. Unfortunately, too little sleep can cause a number of issues, including obesity, depression, heart disease, high blood pressure, irritability and low libido. Poor sleep can also increase the risk of getting a serious disease such as diabetes and even premature death. A lack of sleep can contribute to poor brain functioning.

Types of Sleeping Pills

There are a variety of options that you can choose from when looking for a sleeping pill to help you get to sleep. Some sleeping pills are over-the-counter medications, while others are prescription drugs. There are a number of effective sleeping tablets available online such as Zopiclone, Zolpidem and Zopisign. These are a prescription medication and is most widely prescribed medication to help people who suffer from insomnia.

Side Effects of Sleeping Pills

Problems related to sleep and quality of sleep can arise in several ways. Many sleep medications can suppress the body’s ability to regulate itself. This means if you take more than you’re used to, you will experience extreme sleepiness and confusion. On the flip side, if you’re taking a sleep medication that helps you go to sleep, you may be irritable, uncomfortable, and sleepy throughout the day. Taking your medication at the wrong time of day can result in daytime sleepiness, as well. Some drugs are also known to be addictive. For those that are willing to work with their doctor, a 12-step program can be helpful in learning how to cope with sleep problems.
